What is Magento?

Magento System is an open-source e-commerce platform that offers online merchants the flexibility and control over the appearance, content and functionality of their online store.

To put it simply, Magento enables merchants to build an online store tailored to their business needs. Its intuitive administration interface offers great marketing functionalities, product sales monitoring, performance tracking and much more.

After it was first launched, Magento quickly became the number one choice for a customizable and affordable ecommerce platform. Thanks to the free Community version (now called Magento Open SourceMagento Open Source) and the relatively short on-boarding time, it has been rapidly adopted by thousands of businesses who value adaptability and ease of use.

Over the past decade, Magento (now referred to as Magento 1) has built a reputation for being the most popular e-commerce platform in the world – but years have caught up to it and an overhaul was sorely needed. Although pundits predicted that the new and improved version of Magento 2 would be released in 2011, it took the developers an additional four years to complete and release the new version.

Magento 1’s days are numbered!

Many e-commerce businesses are extremely cautious when it comes to software migration- for good reason.  Even a small problem with the functioning of a website or a new system can cause the online store to slow down or – worse – suffer a serious downtime. However despite valid reservations, we urge you to think long and hard about migrating to Magento 2, which offers great advancements in terms of flexibility and functionality.

Do you have questions about your online store and migration to Magento?Do you have questions about your online store and migration to Magento?

Still, there is one thing to remember – the need to move to Magento 2 is growing with each passing day. Magento will cease support for Magento 1 on November 1, 2020, and only select multinational companies will remain eligible for two years of extended support.

Why is this important?

  • Security patches for earlier versions will not be released anymore after the expiration of the support period.
  • Your competitive advantage will be compromised as new features and plugins will not be added to Magento 1. Magento 2 is already being constantly updated with new extensions and innovations that can help you maintain your competitive edge and further grow your business.
  • As the code base grows older, Magento 1 will become increasingly vulnerable, which will make it an easy target for hackers.
  • Running any unsupported software can be very risky, especially if the unsupported software is a fundamental part of your business. This is one of the main reasons why we recommend a transition to Magento 2 if you have not already done so.

What are the benefits of Magento 2?

Magento 2 was released in 2015 as the latest version of the Magento eCommerce platformMagento eCommerce platform used by 25% of online stores worldwide.

What it offers:

  • Improved performance

Sites on Magento 2 run on average 20% faster than Magento 1 sites.

  • Simplified Add to Cart / Purchase processes

By default, Magento 1 offers a six-step purchasing process. This is greatly simplified in Magento 2 which has a default two-step process as well as an Instant Purchase option. Merchants can offer returning buyers a faster buying experience with pre-stored payment methods and shipping information. This allows the buyer to skip the purchase steps completely, and the system will take them directly to the purchase confirmation page.

  • Better user interface

The Magento 1 user interface was extremely unintuitive and difficult to learn for less adept “non-technical” users. Magento 2 offers a clear and user-friendly experience allowing even the least technically savvy users to easily find tools and add new product listings.

  • Optimized for mobile

An increasing number of online stores are seeing the trend of online shopping moving to mobile channels. For this reason, it is essential that your online store is tailored to mobile devices to improve user experience and increase sales. Magento 1 online stores lack optimal performance on mobile devices, while Magento 2 offers a mobile first shopping experience.

It is important to note, however, that moving from Magento 1 to Magento 2 is not done with a single click; it involves modifying structures, themes, and databases and working with a new API.

Remember: this is a migration, not an upgrade, so everything has to be done professionally to avoid problems. Furthermore, the time required for migration varies with each online store – however, the approximate migration time is “at least 1 month“.
Keep in mind that the time required depends entirely on the degree of customization and complexity of your existing Magento 1 online store.

We recommend that you not delay your migration and transfer your online store to the new and improved Magento 2 system as soon as possible.
